 JOHN BERRY FISHING REPORT

BLUE RIBBON FLY SHOP FISHING REPORT JUNE

BY JOHN BERRY

All of the lakes in the White River System are currently below flood pool and generation is limited. There is reliable wadable water on both rivers most days. We are encountering some warm water conditions on the lower White River below Calico Rock but the upper river is in good shape. The Corps of Engineers is releasing some water at times to alleviate the problem. The upper White and the Norfork are unaffected and are fishing well.

The caddis are on the wane. There is still some limited action on the upper White River from Wildcat Shoals to Bull Shoals Dam in the mid to late afternoon. The best way to fish them is to concentrate on caddis pupa before the hatch starts. My favorite pattern is the fluttering caddis. Once the pupa begin to move to the top of the water column to begin their emergence, switch over to a soft hackle like my green butt. You will know when this occurs because there will be rising trout but no insects. When you observe trout keying in on adult insects, it is time to begin fishing your elk hair caddis.

Any day now the sulphurs will begin coming off. This is our best may fly hatch of the year. Here again we want to fish every stage of the emergence. Start off with a nymph. My choice is a copper John size fourteen. Other effective patterns are pheasant tail nymphs and gold ribbed hares ears. Once the Nymphs begin their emergence, switch over to a partridge and orange soft hackle. When the adults start coming off switch to a parachute sulphur. Frequently the nymphal or emerger phase will be more productive but not as much fun as fishing dry flies.

There is also some good action on midge patterns. The most effective are red or black zebra midges with silver wire and silver beads. On the White, the best sizes are 16 and 18. On the Norfork the insects are smaller. Try a size 20 or smaller and 6X tippet or smaller. Midge emergers are also effective. My favorite is Dan’s turkey tail emerger.

The Buffalo River and Crooked Creek are both very low and gin clear. Both are still navigable but you may have to walk your boat through some shallow spots. The conditions are perfect and the smallmouth are active. Many anglers have reported success with Clouser minnows or crawfish patterns. The key to success is to get away from the public accesses. The best way to fish both streams is to float them by canoe or kayak.

The Spring River is low and clear. The canoe season is upon us and the boaters can be a nuisance. Try fishing at Lassiter’s access which is upstream of any boating pressure. The best flies are olive woolly buggers, Y2Ks and pink San Juan worms.

Stop by the shop for up to date river conditions and fly suggestions. Good luck and good fishing!

White River Special

Blue Ribbon’s own fly tier, Bob Krause invented the White river special when he was fed up with the tippet twist while fishing Wooly Buggers. His answer was the White River Special. A similar streamer with a red thread head fished in a similar fashion as Wooly Buggers, with a much higher success rate. Tie some up for yourself!

Materials List:

Hook – Any streamer hook, 2-3 extra long, size 12 -16
Bead – optional, to match hook size
Thread – Red
Tail – Marabou, Olive, brown, or black
Lead – wrap to match size of hook
Body – dubbed. Wapsi Rabbit or Awesome Possum, to match color of tail
Rib – Oval gold French tinsel, small or medium, to match hook size
Head – 3 to 4 turns of hackle. Color to match tail
