A LuXurious Roadtrip!

Roadtrips are exciting, exhilarating, a whole lot of fun – and unmerciful on your back. As anyone knows, when you ‘scrunch’ up in a car and travel the back roads and highways of America (especially the ones where tar seems to be an afterthought) a great deal of pain comes along with the enjoyment of the scenery.

Recently my mother and I – two people who are extremely into history and all the legends, myths, old buildings and locations that can be found in the U.S. – had the chance to flee from home and travel down to the Virginia Beach area. Talk about a lesson in history! The amazing things we saw that I had, up until then, only heard about on “The History Channel” appeared before our eyes. So we certainly didn’t mind the uncomfortable beds or excessive heat that came along with our journey. And it came as quite a surprise when we discovered that there was a very real ‘oasis’ in our near future that would turn our vacation from ‘good’ one to a ‘great’ one in only an hour.

When I was standing at the top of the Cape Henry Lighthouse tower, trying my best to enjoy the temperature of 101 degrees, I was learning all about the lighthouse that actually guards the entrance into the Chesapeake Bay. That spot gives a person a sense of complete awe, knowing that they’re standing near the very site of the “First Landing” when the Jamestown settlers came to America in 1607. It was almost thrilling to stand in a monument that had been the sentinel guarding that magnificent moment in time since 1792.

My feet were literally touching the sandstone of the octagonal lighthouse that was approved by George Washington; and, thankfully, unlike some things in this world, the lighthouse was preserved over the centuries so that the public would always know what went on here. Using my imagination in order to ‘see’ the thrill of the crossing as well as the harshness of a life being led in a ‘New World’ that was just beginning to open its eyes and arms to the rest of the globe, was unforgettable.

Mom and I took the guided walking tour (even though the heat didn’t let up for a minute) and enjoyed the entire area, including the dune that at least afforded us a small breeze when we walked to the top. No as everybody knows (and especially with the unending heat we’ve all been experiencing this year) walking can go from being a ‘fun’ thing to do to a chore – just like getting back in the car and driving to the next ‘must see’ location.

We were, however, smart enough to take the time to really look around and found ourselves standing in front of another amazing location – but this time it was from the 20th century. The sign on the door read, MassageLuXe – and the large ‘X’ in the logo really did make me believe like it was marking the spot!

Knowing that with a vacation comes the chance to bask in a little bit of luxury and treat yourself to a true ‘day off,’ Mom and I were literally stunned when we walked into the business and felt as if we’d stepped through the doors of a ‘5-star’ hotel. From the front desk to the welcoming furniture to the artistic statues that decorated the various corners – lovely pieces that seemed to represent humans in a ‘joyful’ state of relaxation and peace – everything about the MassageLuXe ‘first impression’ was amazing.

Just hearing about all the perfect things to choose from made us both feel rejuvenated in seconds. The rooms were cool, calm and tranquil – with lighting that was soothing to the eye, and a robe that was so soft and luxurious I wanted to be one of those really ‘bad’ visitors and hide it in my travel bag before I left. (No…I didn’t…but there’s always tomorrow).

From the soothing atmosphere to the warm waiting rooms that offer a choice of beverage, MassageLuXe truly was something that took the edge off (and cooled the skin) after the long ride and the Lighthouse tour. It was literally one of those places you never want to leave.

Virginia Beach is so preserved and honors their history – what with the Lighthouse and even The Old Coast Guard Station that speaks volumes about Virginia’s maritime heritage – that it was actually interesting to sit and think about how the past and present come together and compliment each other. I mean, think about it! With all the work, sweat and no air-conditioning back in the day, those Jamestown settlers would have longed for a MassageLuXe to ease the pain.

I certainly have watched the massage industry expand by leaps and bounds over the past decade. In fact, it’s gone from simply a ‘sport’ of the wealthy, to a true industry for the masses. Not to mention that the healthcare industry is leaning heavily now on the powers of massage to help many – including my mother’s own arthritic conditions. But when you really delve into this industry, MassageLuXe stands out from the rest. Not only because the staff excels at their jobs, but also because the services that MassageLuXe provides are ‘popping up’ in a variety of states so that all people can enjoy their concept.  (Luxury for the non-wealthy – Finally!)

Everyday this national franchise is developing new locations, which is not only beneficial to all us travelers out there – but it’s also bringing tremendous jobs to the marketplace. Why tremendous? Just talking to the staff at the location while we were there I noted that they truly LOVE the company they work for…which, as the rest of us know, is a hard thing to find. The Certified Massage Therapists had skill and talent beyond anyone else I’ve ever seen, yet another way that MassageLuXe is unmatched by any other competition.

My mother was extremely excited. When we entered the spa we were welcomed by such friendly people and provided with a confidential questionnaire. This was fantastic because the Massage Therapist wanted to know any concerns or special needs that the client might have (such as dealing with the harsh effects of arthritis). They also wanted to know of any specific areas to focus on when providing the massage therapy. This, to me, showed a tremendous dedication to their job and showed that MassageLuXe was NOT the average ‘day spa’ that can be found in any and all shopping malls.

Talk about exceeding expectations! Not only was the area extremely historic and very cool to learn about and be a part of, but the present-day marvel of MassageLuXe made the trip even more special!  Next? We are ‘on the road again.’ My mother has always wanted to see St. Louis and, thankfully, (because I made sure to find a map of all the MassageLuXe locations), we are in for a relaxing stay. We just have to get through a whole lot of traffic and highways to get there.

What’s my idea? Maybe MassageLuXe should think about opening hotels. After all, they’ve already conquered the massage realm, now they can think about turning their brilliant brains toward offering the most comfortable beds and most relaxing inns in the country. RelaXLuXe anyone?

Until Next Time, Everybody.
